I’d like to tell you where the inspiration came from to start Jen’s Friends.
It’s very simple, My mum!
My mum encouraged my sisters and I to use our imaginations. We gave names to ALL our cuddly toys, or as we called them “Friends”.
They all had their own personalities, and my mum would make up new bedtime stories every night, always including our Friends.
When they got dirty she would say that they went off to the spa to get clean - This tradition has continued with our own children.
Friends come with us for days out, holidays, movie night, dinner, bath time, pretty much everything. You can imagine how dirty they get. Even now my eldest daughter still insists that we send her favourite Friend off to my mum’s house (over three hours away) to be washed at Nana’s Spa.
Predictably we end up with too many Friends. When this happens, I get my girls to divide their Friends into two piles. Keep / Rehome. The keep pile is always the biggest so here is the rule we use: IF YOU CAN REMEMBER THEIR NAME, THEN YOU CAN KEEP THEM!
This may sound like a good plan but as someone who always gravitates towards the Friend with the wonky eye or missing button, it becomes quite hard to part with the Friends.
I still find it hard to part with any of them when I know that they could end up in anonymous wire bins, unloved and losing their personality and history. sat there worrying that no one will understand why their left ear doesn’t have fur on it, when it's because a little person used to like rubbing it on her nose.
My Inspiration
To honour my mum and her wonderful way of sparking imagination and adventure in her children and grandchildren.
Giving much loved Friends a chance to continue their story
Spreading happiness Reducing the number of single use toys
Saving the world one Friend at a time
